July 26 marked the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), celebrating 30 full years of progress in access and inclusion for all people living with disabilities. The ADA was passed on July 26, 1990, prohibiting discrimination against, and ensuring equality for all people with disabilities. Local nonprofit organization, Easter Seals Greater Houston, is the largest provider of services for people with disabilities in Houston and the seven county area and aims to carry on its mission for inclusivity on all levels.
For over 70 years, Easter Seals has offered much needed help, hope and answers to people of all ages with all types of disabilities and their families through therapy, training, education, assistive technology and support services. Today, the organization provides multiple outstanding service programs including Children’s Therapy, Early Childhood Intervention, life skills and job readiness, Veterans’ Services, care-giving Services, The Caroline School, Employment, Camp, and many more.
During the challenging times of COVID-19, we are reminded of how important it is to create a world where each and every one of us is 100% included in all aspects of society, especially in obtaining access to health care, education and employment. We celebrate the progress the ADA has made for people with disabilities and acknowledge the work that lies ahead. Easter Seals Greater Houston is proud to continue the fight to remove all barriers and make the world a more accessible and inclusive place for those living with disabilities. With the help of the ADA, the disability community has continuously seen advancements in accessibility, health care, inclusion and more, but we still have a long journey to level the playing field.
