Urban Harvest is a non-profit organization that enhances the Houston community by gardening classes, garden programming, farmers markets, and youth education programs.
Urban harvest was first founded in 1994 when most people believed that food could not be grown organically in Houston. However, Urban Harvest succeeded by proving that sustainable fruits and vegetables can flourish in Houston’s unpredictable climate. It even emphasizes that locally grown food, can empower and revive our region.
During this pandemic, Urban Harvest decided to launch Back-to-School Grow Kits for pick up every Saturday of September 2020 at the farmers market. The “Grow Kit” includes a five- gallon grow bag, ‘decorate your own’ plant labels, soil from Farm Dirt, two seasonal plant starts Basil and Dino Kale, flower seeds, Microlife fertilizer, and detailed instructions for the gardener to follow. Each kit costs $20, and there is an option to “Buy One and Give one” for $35. The second kit will be donated to students at Kashmere Garden elementary school.
Janna Roberson, the executive director of Urban Harvest, argued that “One of our most rewarding programs developed during COVID is the home gardening and virtual programming we are providing to students in the greater Houston area.” Janna is very proud that the “Grow Kits” served as a way for kids and parents to spend time together outside learning and watching their plants develop.”
If you’d like to order a “Grow Kit,” pre-order yours prior to Thursday at 5pm at this website: https://urbanharvest.networkforgood.com/events/22907.
