The Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery

today announced a five-city tour of the portraits of President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama by artists Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald. The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, will be the final stop of this national tour, displaying the portraits from March 25 to May 30, 2022.

Shakespeare Festival

The Shakespeare Festival will feature two plays produced by the University of Houston at the Miller Outdoor Theater. The first play Julius Caesar, which we be on August 2, 4, 6. 8, amd 10, civic duty wrestles with political ambition in this fast and furious production..  The second play will be As You Like It on August 3, 7, 9 and 11. The show starts at 8:15 p.m. each night. Free tickets are available (4 per person over age 16 while they last) at the Miller Outdoor Theatre box office the day of the performance between the hours of 10:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m.. Lebowski Bash

Sunday Funday in Market Square Park! August brings the Houston Big Lebowski Bash to the Historic District! Market Square Park’s popular Blanket Bingo series returns to Downtown’s Historic District this summer and fall. Houston Ballet presents the return of Swan Lake by Artistic Director Stanton Welch at the Jones Hall. Red Nose Day is back! Now until June 2, Walgreens is selling the iconic red noses with proceeds to benefit local charities including the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, the Houston Food Bank, and the Children’s Health Fund. The campaign has raised more than $100 million in the U.S. so far. Red Nose Day will culminate on May 24 with a night of special television programming celebrating Red Nose Day on NBC.

Theatre Under the Stars presents Sleeping Beauty and Her Winter Knight a modern twist on the classic fairy tale, set to a contemporary score featuring the music of Bruno Mars, Jessie J, John Legend, Katy Perry, Mariah Carey, LMFAO, and Pharrell Williams. Sleeping Beauty and Her White Knight is based on the European fairy tale where a Princess named Aurora has a curse put on her by an evil fairy. The Royal Family live under protection from Silly Billy and Nanny Tickle, but Aurora does prick her finger and falls asleep for 100 years. Festival of Jewish Culture

Celebrate and learn more about the Jewish culture at Evelyn’s Park from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. There will be musical performances, vendors selling Judaica (Jewish-themed stuff such as artwork, jewelry, ritual items, etc.), representation from various synagogues and Jewish organizations, a few Jewish foods to sample, and some fun activities for the whole family. It is time for the 37th annual Nutcracker Market themed Rockin’ and Shoppin’ featuring over 280 vendors from across the country in Reliant Center. A Christmas Carol – A Ghost Story of Christmas

Houston’s holiday favorite returns to the Alley Theatre with a re-telling of Charles Dickens’s classic story, which follows Ebenezer Scrooge’s journey with the three ghostly spirits that visit him on Christmas Eve. A Christmas Carol instills a powerful message about redemption and the spirit of the holiday season. On Your Feet! – The Story of Emilio and Gloria Estefan

November 21st through the 26th, the Broadway hit musical, “On Your Feet!”  is coming to the Hobby Center. This musical depicts the life of Grammy- winning superstar, Gloria Estefan and her husband, also a Grammy-winning superstar, Emilio Estefan. The musical will feature an all- star cast with 16 of its 28 members having joined directly from Broadway. Tuesday through Friday the show will begin at 7:30 p.m., Saturday at 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., and Sunday at 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tickets start at $35 and are available online at www.TheHobbyCenter.org

The Secret Garden

The Secret Garden is a musical based on the 1911 novel of the same name by Frances Hodgson Burnett. The musical’s script and lyrics are by Marsha Norman, with music by Lucy Simon. It premiered on Broadway in 1991 and ran for 709 performances.

The story is set in the early years of the 20th century. Mary Lennox, a young English girl born and raised in the British Raj, is orphaned by a cholera outbreak when she is ten years old. She is sent away from India to Yorkshire, England, to live with relatives whom she has never met. Her own personality blossoms as she and a young gardener bring new life to a neglected garden, as well as to her sickly cousin and uncle.   www.tuts.com

“Dixie’s Tupperware Party”

Wings Over Houston- Ellington Air Field

The CAF Wings Over Houston Airshow is an IRC 501(c)(3) community event presented by the volunteer efforts of the Houston Wing, Gulf Coast Wing , and Tora! Tora! Tweens Read Book Festival

The seventh annual Tweens Read Book Festival, in conjunction with Blue Willow Bookshop is ready to connect with younger readers. The festival taking place at South Houston High School from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. is aimed at children in grades five through eight. Younger readers will get a chance to discover new books and meet with established authors and illustrators. Astronaut and author Leland Melvin, whose book Chasing Space was published earlier this year, headlines the festival with a morning keynote address. The event is free. Main Street Theatre presents their performance of Akeelah and the Bee. Akeelah has a gift for words and a determined spirit. This is the inspirational journey of an 11 year old girl whose courage touches the hearts of her coach, her school and her neighborhood. Xanadu

Stages Repertory Theatre presents their production Xanadu to the Miller Outdoor Theatre. Inspiration and love collide in this hilarious, roller-skating musical that slyly questions the role of art in pop culture. Based on the 1980 cult classic film, Xanadu overflows with joyous high-spirited fun as Kira, a beautiful Greek muse, descends from Mt. Olympus to Venice Beach, California, inspiring struggling artist Sonny to create the pinnacle of artistic achievement — the Roller Disco! But when Kira falls into forbidden love with the mortal Sonny, her jealous sisters conspire to create endlessly entertaining mayhem. Art is an Outdoor Market at Republic Square

West Houston Creative Campus will hold Art is an Outdoor Market a free all-day lakefront event from 11am – 6pm; showcasing 70 visual art and craft vendors, food, live music and kids’ stations. Texas Renaissance Fair Opening Weekend
